Governor's Cup Raises Ksh 8.5m For Il Motiok Sec School

Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi is a man who believes in education. A charity golf tournament on September 4, 2021, raised over Kshs. 8.5 million which will help residents of Il Motiok, Laikipia North, have a secondary school.

Education opens doors to many opportunities and Governor Ndiritu Muriithi's aim is to ensure that every child gets a secondary school education as the basic.

The golf tournament at Nanyuki Golf Club, dubbed 'Governor's Cup 2021' raised money to construct Il-Motiok Secondary School, next to the primary school.

We are very grateful for this noble move by the Governor. The nearest secondary school Kimanjo Mixed Secondary School is 12 kilometers away. Many students have been forced to drop out of school upon completion of their primary school education. said Mr. Joseph Legei, the outgoing headteacher Il-Motiok primary school.

Mr. Legei added that this is a fulfillment of what the governor promised in 2017 that every location in Laikipia North must have a secondary school that every student will comfortably walk to acquire education.

Education is the ticket to social transformation. You cannot change society if you are not educating the people.Governor Muriithi said.

The contribution both in cash and in-kind amounted to Ksh. 8,530,000 which will bring the desired positive change to the area.

Mindset

Lack of education has been linked to insecurity in the Amaya Region. Education, which opens up and changes the mindset of the people, will be a great contributor in efforts to diversify economic activities in the region.

Education is one of the soft security strategies that Laikipia County and Amaya counties are pursuing to fight the perennial insecurity issues, mostly arising within every election cycle or drought in the northern and western part of the county.

The government is addressing the socio-economic imbalances in the region. For instance, in Tiaty sub-county in Baringo which shares the border with Laikipia, 75 percent of all persons aged three years and above have never been to any form of learning institution, according to the 2019 Kenya National Census report.

In Laikipia North sub-county 49 percent within the same age bracket have never been to school. Our policies have been our own undoing. The government has not only invested little in terms of education in the Laikipia North sub-county.

A lasting solution to the banditry attacks and invasions of private lands in Laikipia and the insecurity issue in the entire Amaya region (Baringo, Samburu, Isiolo, and Laikipia) the government must address the conflict from the broader context of issues under the veneer of the conflict.

The Kshs. 8,530,000 for Il-Motiok was raised in partnership with EM Naturals, Kenya Pipeline, Isuzu East Africa, Rentco Africa Ltd, Shell, National Bank, KCB, Standard Chartered, Absa Bank, Stanbic Bank, Batuk, among others.

On October 9, 2021, there will be a replica of such an event at the Nyahururu Sports Club to raise more funds.
