There was jubilation in Laikipia Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre as one of the boys rescued from Nanyuki streets gets a Wings-to-Fly scholarship, opening doors for the student.

This is after Stephen Otieno scored 351 marks out of the possible 500 in the 2021 KCPE examination conducted early this year. On 4th May 2022, he was admitted to Nanyuki High School - the best school preferred by many candidates as over 156,000 eyed to occupy the 480 slots.

Otieno was rescued by the Centre to help him recover from his glue sniffing and smoking bhang addiction. He is from a single mother hailing from Likii slums. His mother was unable to cater to Otieno and his three siblings. Otieno resulted to the streets where he borrowed money and ended up abusing drugs, and was later rescued and placed at CEDC. Though he escaped at various times due to addiction through the efforts of the Centre he managed to stay and completed his class Eight exams.

Laikipia Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre is home to the County Government which rescues vulnerable children who are in need of care and protection from Laikipia County and beyond. The home gives the rescued children basic needs and education.

In the academic year 2021, the home had six children in class eight and one in form four. The score for those in class eight was as follows: 351, 289, 288, 287, 235, and 132. The other boys will be joining Ndururi High School in Nyahururu.

Mary Moiyale a girl who was in form four managed to score a mean grade of C- and the center in partnership with the guardians will take her to college.

On behalf of our children, we thank the County Government of Laikipia for having a heart for the vulnerable children and we also thank all well-wishers who come to us with great hearts to help our children.
