New Dawn For Laikipia As Governor Addresses Water Problems

  0

Laikipia county is a rather semi-arid area that receives the little amount of rain and more so during a time like this when seasons have changed due to environmental changes and global warming.

In the better part of the county, the majority of residents depend on livestock farming and general agriculture which require a constant supply of water.

In a bid to ensure that residents have money in their pockets, H.E. Governor Joshua Irungu has come up with some ways to address water problems in the county for sustainable development. In his address as he took the oath of office on August 25, this year, the governor promised that he will ensure that no Laikipian will be moving for more than three kilometers in search of water for either their animals or domestic usage.

I am committed to providing at least 50,000 water tanks to households across the county. This will promote rainwater harvesting, storage, and treatment. There will be an extension of water infrastructure to more households in all major municipalities.he said. Our main goal will be to ensure that no Laikipian will walk from more than 3km in search of water both for domestic usage and livestock.the county head added.

Supply of clean and adequate water also helps in minimizing water-borne diseases, as well as intercommunity conflicts that arise as people fight for the limited water points for their animals. Availability of water will therefore restore peace in warring areas of the county and across the border counties.

NAWASCO and NyahuWASCO help in managing water issues in Laikipia East and West respectively. In addition to this, H.E. Governor Irungu has committed to ensuring there is a firm that will cater to the water needs in Laikipia North Sub County.

I am glad to announce that plans are well underway to establish a Laikipia North Water and Sewerage Company and Board.the Governor assured.
