Addressing Drought Issue In Laikipia

  1
The County Government of Laikipia has established a steering committee that will be receiving and distributing food to the hunger-stricken areas in the county.
This is after a day-long consultation between the County Government and representatives from the National Government, led by the HE the Governor Joshua Irungu and County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri.
The aim is to ensure both levels of government come together for a common purpose of helping the neediest in the county and at the same time avoid duplication of roles.
Around 183,000 people have been affected by the drought after receiving minimum rains this year. School going children in more than 38 schools across the county have been affected, and estimated 100,000 livestock confirmed dead.
My government has put aside Ksh. 20million towards this intervention.
We urge all the partners and well-wishers to join us in fight against this drought. Lets all be our brothers keeper.
I know we have good people who have directly started initiatives similar to this, I must commend them. However, to ensure interventions do not benefit some twice, I urge them to get into contact with this steering committee so that all beneficiaries are properly documented.
To further boost this intervention holistically, I have directed Department of Education to prioritize the most affected families, even during bursary disbursement
