The County Government of Laikipia in partnership with The Horn of Africa De-Risking, Inclusion and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies (DRIVE), is implementing a project to cushion pastoralists and livestock farmers in Laikipia.
The project seeks to build resilience to climate shocks by enhancing pastoralists access to financial services for drought mitigation, inclusion to livestock value chain and facilitation of livestock trade.
To ensure better implementation of the project, stakeholders attended a training workshop opened by H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH. The Governor emphasized on need to ensure that the project succeeds and has intended benefits to pastoral communities.
Livestock farming remains as one of the most important source of income and food for rural households in Laikipia North. However, the sector has drastically been affected by prevailing drought period due to climate change. The situation has led to reduced forage, increasing livestock morbidity rate.
The project will strengthen support for pastoralists in the county by rapidly increasing access to cash by tapping into drought insurance and savings during dry season, and offer reliable direct linkages to livestock processors through market contracts.
Speaking during the workshop opening, CECM in charge of Agriculture and Livestock Dennis Kasoo promised Governor and development partner, DRIVE, that his docket will ensure smooth implementation of the project to its intended objectives - strengthening livestock value chains, creating resilience in food security, and boosting livestock trade viability.
