The Kenya Red Cross Laikipia Branch has installed H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH, as their patron in an event led by Red Cross NEC member Ali Gedi in Nanyuki.
As the patron, the Governor will play a critical role in supporting Red Cross activities in Laikipia such as strengthening disaster management response, improving food security and hygiene, and drought mitigation measures.
Governor Irungu has committed to work closely with the society while observing the seven principles of the society that include; humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
I will serve in this position to ensure we continue to save peoples lives through quick response, said the Governor, adding that the work of the Red Cross touches on areas he is passionate about.
He also promised to mobilize county staff to register as life members of the society and be trained in life saving skills to respond accordingly in case a disaster strikes.
Muthoni Rutere, Central region chairperson said that the Society will work with the County Government to ensure that programs initiated in Laikipia are sustainable to serve the residents in the long run.
"We want to ensure that going forward, we show residents how to fish, not just give them fish, as Laikipia has diverse opportunities that can be exploited," she said.
