Residents of Nanyuki and the environs are set to enjoy the convenience of decent spaces for trading after the National Government assured of a collaboration with the county government to elevate the market status of the mitumba and open air markets in Nanyuki with a modern design.
The good news was announced today by Principal Secretary (PS) State Department of Housing And Urban Development Charles Hinga. The PS had set boots on the ground to witness the challenges the traders have been enduring during all sorts of weathers.
We are working towards ensuring that we give dignity to every trader by ensuring a conducive working environment. You work so hard by waking up even before five and closing late at night and thus we have come to assure you of making your work easier and smarter, said the PS as he addressed traders in Nanyuki Open Air Market.
Before the commencement of the construction work, there will be an enumeration exercise for all the traders currently occupy the spaces, and the list will be made public to ensure that upon completion, nobody will be misplaced. The government will also develop designs and a plan for the markets and allow the traders to make their contributions on areas of improvement.
We want to ensure that those who have been enduring the harsh trading environment get first priority upon completion of the modern markets, said H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH, and whose words were echoed by the PS.
The modernized markets will have clean and adequate water supply, clean ablution blocks, ample parking spaces, a creche to take care of kids, and other facilities all meant to provide dignity the workers as well as attract more customers.
The construction work will also provide job opportunities to the people of Laikipia.
I urge you to consider the locals when the construction of these markets begin. We want our people to have something in their pockets out of this work, noted Laikipia East MP Hon. Mwangi Kiunjuri, adding that the two markets will benefit the whole of the region as traders come from as far as the neighboring counties.
