Plan Launched To Manage Mukogondo Forest, 2023 2027

Mukogodo Forest in Laikipia North Sub County is set to undergo a major transformation on matters conservation and restoration, following the launch of the Mukogodo Participatory Forest Management Plan (PFMP) on 23rd May 2023.
The event was followed by signing of the Forest Management Agreement (FMA) between Kenya Forest Service and ILMAMUSI Mukogodo Community Forest Association governing Mukogodo forest that covers an area of 30, 189 hectares.
ILMAMUSI is an acronym representing the names of the four community groups surrounding and conserving the forest. These are; Il Ngwesi, Makurian, Kurikuri and Lekurruki.
The event took place at Lokusero Secondary School and was graced by the area Member of Parliament Sarah Korere.
Mukogodo forest is a unique one owing to the fact that it is in the middle of a desert, is surrounded by four community lands and have communities living inside the forest.
The chief guest commended the roles the community has been playing to ensure sustainability of the forest, citing that the signing of the FMA will enhance their efforts.
The County Government of Laikipia played a pivotal role in revising the Mukogodo PFMP through the Department of Water, Environment & Natural Resources - Laikipia County
The signed plan will provide a roadmap for enterprises like bee keeping, ecotourism, herbal medicine development and research, and education geared towards enhanced livelihood of the community adjacent to the forest.
Implementation of the plan will include among others, planting of trees in the area.
