The county government of Laikipia joined hands with NEMA, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and other strategic stakeholders in celebrating World Environment Day, which is observed annually on June 5. This year's theme, "Solutions to Plastic Pollution" under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution, calls for collective responsibility in speeding up action towards reducing plastic waste in our environment.
This year, 2023, marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day since it was initiated in 1973. To honor the day, an event packed with vibrant activities was held at the Nanyuki Vocational Training Center. The day commenced with an awareness procession that was flagged off by Laikipia Deputy Governor H.E. Reuben Kamuri, the chief guest for the day. The procession aimed at raising awareness on the importance of taking precautionary measures to combat plastic pollution.
A clean-up activity in Majengo area followed, with participants collecting solid waste disposed of in the vicinity. Interestingly, the area had minimal plastic waste thanks to 'Chumeplasoles," a waste handling business that collects and sorts solid waste.
While acknowledging the significant role played by the Department of Water, Environment, and Natural Resources in managing solid waste in the county, the Deputy Governor noted that the government is committed to eradicating plastic waste through the establishment of policies that promote sustainable waste management. In this context, he called for public-private partnerships in conserving the environment for a sustainable future.
''Urgent action is required to end plastic pollution, and with this, we are exploring ways to protect our environment by prioritizing sustainable waste management practices and policies that will help create a healthier ecosystem for the coming generations. '' Said the D.G.
In her speech, the CEC Water, Environment, and Natural Resources retaliated on the need for collective responsibility in accelerating robust solutions to plastic waste. She also proposed the need to bring together all recyclers in Laikipia for a learning visit to foundations such as 'TAKATAKA NI MALI' to equip them with skills on how to recycle and manage waste in a sustainable way.
Other commemorative activities for the day included tree-planting, an exhibition, a volleyball tournament, and the award of trophies and certificates.
In attendance were stakeholders such as Hand in Hand, Kenya Red Cross, Mt. Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, Projects Africa, World Water Fund, Equity Bank, BATUK, and Mt. Kenya Network Forum, among others.
