The CECM Water, Environment and Natural Resources, Ms. Leah Njeri, together with Director of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. David King'ori, attended a consultative meeting convened by the FAO Kenya National Project Steering Committee, a decision-making body for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) projects restoration and bio enterprise development.
The objective of the meeting was to review the 2022-2023 project implementation report and approve the annual work plan and budget for this financial year (2023-2024), as FAO Kenya is currently implementing The Restoration Initiative (TRI) projects centered on ecosystem restoration in Laikipia, Marsabit, and Isiolo counties
The restoration initiatives include tree planting, grass reseeding, agroforestry, as well as forest and grass land management. These initiatives are aimed at addressing deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity loss, all of which are exacerbated by climate change, threatening the availability of ecosystem services.
In Laikipia, 148ha of Mukogodo forest have been restored thanks to the FAO Kenya restoration initiative that supports community-led forest and landscape restoration, in this case the ILMAMUSI Mukogodo Community Forest Association. The initiative also promotes the utilization of non-timber forest products such as fruits, honey, and medicinal plants, to improve the socioeconomic development of communities, particularly the pastoral communities.
In support of these initiatives, the CECM Water, Ms. Leah Njeri, assured of the county government's commitment to developing and strengthening the existing policies that are geared towards improving natural resource governance to ensure effective water, forest, and land management.
The climax of today's meeting was a courtesy call at the governor's office, where the deputy governor, H.E. Reuben Kamuri, represented the Laikipia Governor H.E Joshua Irungu, EGH in commending and acknowledging the role FAO Kenya has played in improving food and water security as well as restoring and conserving forests and landscapes to increase climate change resilience.
A number of trees were also planted at the Governor's office ground to symbolize continuous partnership in the restoration journey.
Present in the meeting were the FAO Kenya representatives led by Mr. Hamisi Williams, Asst. FAO Representative in Kenya, and representatives from the National Government's state departments of Environment & Climate Change, and Trade, as well as representatives from Marsabit and Isiolo counties, the National Community Forest Associations (NACOFA), KFRI, KFS, and the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, among others.
