Drive Project Launched In Laikipia

Laikipia County was privileged to host H.E the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua for the official launch of the DRIVE project in the Country at Naibor Segera Ward, Laikipia North.
The De-risking inclusion and value enhancement of pastoral Economies in the Horn of Africa (DRIVE)project is being implemented in 21 ASAL counties in the country to protect the pastoralists against the recurring drought shocks through livestock insurance and facilitation of trade and infrastructure.
Most of the residents of Laikipia North solely depend on Livestock farming as a source of livelihood. In his address, the host Governor HE.Joshua Irungu said that the County Government of Laikipia will work with the project to ensure that livestock farmers benefit fully from the project.
The Deputy President insisted on the Government's commitment in transforming the livelihood of pastoralists by ensuring that they have money at the lowest level in the society.
He also presented cheques amounting to Ks.400 Million for approximately Ks.43,000 farmers registered under the project.
The Deputy President was accompanied by the Cabinet Secretary Agriculture Mithika Linturi , CS East African Community and ASALS Rebecca Miano , Governors from the project target counties and other top officials from the National Government and the County Government of Laikipia.
