In a remarkable step toward progress, H.E. Governor Joshua Irungu EGH, hosted a delegation from Kenyatta University, KENDEX, and Two4one at the County Offices in Nanyuki. The delegation was led by Professor Maina Mwangi, Director of Chandaria Center at Kenyatta University, and the CEO of KENDEX, Stanley Njenga.
The primary objective of the meeting was to lay the foundation for collaboration in key areas that require enhancement, encompassing agriculture, infrastructure, health, housing, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, education, and research sectors.
The county team identified key areas for collaboration, including enhancing coffee production, fostering education and skills development, ensuring food security, value addition, maize aggregation, healthcare, fruit farming ( mainly avocado and macadamia), pig and dairy farming, feedlot development, the county-aggregated industrial park and special economic zone, water conservation, and a comprehensive household economic empowerment program.
Laikipia is launching a household economic empowerment project aimed at ensuring food and nutritional security for 50,000 households. This initiative will promote activities like dairy goat farming, rainwater harvesting, kitchen gardening, beekeeping, poultry farming, and fruit tree cultivation.
In the next ten years, Laikipia aspires to become Kenyas main food basket, leading in the production of various cash crops such as soya beans, coffee, maize, avocado and macadamia. To achieve these goals and more, we recognize the need to seek alternative sources of funding, the Governor said.
He also urged Kenyatta University team to establish Farmers Training Centres in all sub-counties within Laikipia, offering practical, on-the-farm training to farmers engaged in agriculture and livestock farming.
Kenyatta University expressed their eagerness to partner with Laikipia County, bringing their knowledge, skills, and resources to uplift the region. KENDEX, too, aligns with Laikipias development agenda and is poised to make a significant impact.
Our major goal is to provide quality education, improve and enhance research, and change lives for the better. We hope to achieve this in Laikipia through our partnership, Professor Maina said.
