Trees Planting And Growing Exercise At Rumuruti Forest

County Government of Laikipia on Monday teamed up with national government and multiple state agencies to launch a massive tree planting program across several sites in the County.
Speaking at the Rumuruti Forest, H.E. Governor Joshua Irungu EGH said the program will be continuous through out the current short rains season and beyond to restore public forests in the county.
Planting a tree today is an investment in the well-being of future generations. Let our collective efforts nurture a greener legacy for Laikipia and safeguard our environment against the challenges of climate change, Governor Irungu noted.
The chief guest and national government tree planting drive team leader for Nyeri and Laikipia counties, CS Hon. Alice Wahome, said the two neighboring counties had been tasked to plant 250 million tree seedlings out of the national target of 15 billion trees in the next ten years.
We are the cause of climate change, and thus, we bear the responsibility to reverse its effects by restoring forests through planting and growing trees, CS Wahome said.
At Rumuruti Forest, a total of 13,000 trees were planted and 5000 trees were distributed to the communities.
Laikipia County Commissioner Mr. Joseph Kanyiri, termed the Monday drive as a huge success where the County is expected to plant one million tree seedlings in this short rain period.
Senior county government officials present included CS Koinange Wahome, Chief Officers Mike Kemboi, Jecinta Koree, Ibrahim Lemashoe, Chief of Staff Mr John Wambugu among others.
Various State Agencies participated in the Rumuruti drive among them Kenya Wildlife Service(Kwa) led by Assistant Director Ms. Alice Malenya and Kenya Forest Service(KFS) led by County Forest Conservator(CFC) Mr. Allan Ongere.
Other leaders present included Laikipia West Mp. Dr Wachira Karani, County Women Rep, Ms. Jane Kagiri, Marmanet Ward MCA, Samson Kanyutu, and Igwamiti MCA Ms. Irene Wachuka.
