Operationalizing Kirimon Game Reserve: Community Engagement

County Government of Laikipia is keen to operationalize the 43,000-acre Kirimon Game Reserve after HE. President William Ruto unlocked the implementation process.
To operationalise the reserve to productivity, the County Government is alive to the fact that communities have lived within the reserve for decades, and hence, the need to factor their settlement.
In this spirit, HE. Governor Joshua Irungu EGH convened a public participation meeting with squatter living in the reserve, to listen to their grievances and update them on progress.
"My administration is steadfast have this land asset beneficial, and you as a community will be the first beneficiary, once management plan and zoning the land is complete, we shall resettle you, and have you, through your community representative participate into the reserves development," Governor Irungu assured.
A taskforce has been created consisting of county government officials, the community elders and chiefs to ensure there is balance representation during the implementation process.
The Kirimon Game Reserve is shared between County Government and National Youth Service (NYS), located in Sosian Ward, Laikipia North Subcounty.
Various leaders attended including area member of parliament Hon. Sarah Korere, County Secretary Koinange Wahome; CECs including Ekwam Nabos, Stephen Kisorio and Leah Njeri. Members of County Assembly included Hon. Sammy Lekopien, Hon. Nicholous Lempaira, Hon. Benson Kuria; Chief Officers among them Njuki Mahiga, John Gichuki, Abraham Lemanishoe, and representatives from Samburu County Government among other Government officials.
