The Post Mortem Of Lessons Drawn From Uruguay's Beef Industry

Principal Secretary in State Department of Livestock Hon. Jonathan Mueke convened post-mortem workshop of Uruguay benchmarking visit. The focus was on beef commercialisation.
HE. Governor Joshua Irungu EGH led his technical team in the workshop owing to Laikipia Countys strategic interest in beef industry farming and commercialization.
The discussions revolved around revamping and commercialising the beef industry in Kenya focusing on land use management, traceability and disease control to comply with the strict export markets standards.
In his submission, Laikipia County boss indicated that his livestock team is drawing framework which will first guide short-term implementation plans into unlocking the stunted beef industry in Laikipia County.
"Thereafter, medium goals, evaluation of county and national government roles as well as private sector and research institutions will be rolled out in line with national governments framework," the Governor said.
In Kenyas economic blueprint Vision 2030, in the initial stages, Laikipia and Isiolo had been earmarked for a flagship project dubbed Laikipia-Isiolo Complex - for establishment of livestock disease-free zone.
This was in appreciation that the two counties are at strategic position to web all the Northern Kenya region which contributes 60 percent of Kenyas beef export. Worth noting is the huge economic contribution of the industry that shares 12 percent of Kenyas Gross Domestic Product, GDP.
Kenyas beef export quota to European Union was lost in early 1990s due to Kenya's inability to control livestock diseases especially Foot and Mouth diseases, a detrimental economic setback that Kenya, especially Laikipia intends to rectify in effort of bouncing livestock farmers back to profitability.
Success of these efforts will immensely impact on pastoralist communities in Laikipia owing to the fact that livestock farming is their major economic venture - revamping industrialisation, promoting exports and creating job opportunities.
