On June 21, 2024, Laikipia Health Service inaugurated two major projects: the Bulk Liquid Oxygen Tank and delivery system at Nyahururu County Referral Hospital (NCRH) and the Oxygen Infrastructure Project at Rumuruti Sub County Hospital.
Laikipia County Governor, H.E. Hon. Joshua Irungu, EGH, commissioned the Bulk Liquid Oxygen Tank and delivery system at Nyahururu County Referral Hospital (NCRH). Meanwhile, County Secretary Koinange Wahome officiated the ground-breaking ceremony for the Rumuruti project.
Both initiatives have been realized through funding support from the Global Fund, implemented by AMREF Health Africa in Kenya in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
The newly installed Liquid Oxygen tank at NCRH, with a capacity of 3 tonnes, is one of four oxygen delivery systems available at the hospital. This tank delivers high-quality cryogenic oxygen, crucial for critical areas such as operation theatres where equipment is sensitive to oxygen purity. The other delivery systems include an existing Oxygen Plant, refilled Oxygen Cylinders, and Oxygen Concentrators.
The Rumuruti Sub County Hospital will soon benefit from a Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Generation plant, with a capacity of 286 litres of oxygen per minute. This plant, which extracts oxygen from the ambient air, will supply oxygen to inpatient wards and other patient care areas. Construction and installation of this plant began today.
Governor Irungu expressed his gratitude to the partnership teams from the Ministry of Health, led by Dr. Tom Menge, Amref Health Africa, led by Dr. Angela Ndaga, and the Council of Governors-Kenya secretariat, represented by Jemimah Kuta and Charity Karanja. He commended all the technical teams for their efforts in ensuring the timely completion of this 121-million-shilling project.
The Governor also appealed to the Global Fund Kenya Coordination Mechanism to reinvest any savings from the project back into Laikipia County. This additional funding would enhance the Rumuruti Oxygen Plant by adding Oxygen Cylinder Refilling capabilities. He also highlighted the need for a new Oxygen Generation Plant at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital (NTRH), given the ageing state of the current plant. The Governor urged technical teams to secure as much oxygen-related equipment and bulk supplies of liquid or cylinder oxygen as possible from the Fund.
