Pamoja Project is a collective climate action project that aims to empower local communities and support climate change initiatives through a robust framework established by the Laikipia County Climate Change Act and the Water Services Bill 2021.
The initiative took place during a multi-stakeholders inception meeting today presided over by the County Commissioner, Mr. Onesmus Kyatha.
Implementation of the project will focus on enhancing climate change governance, legislative advocacy, and community engagement.
The Pamoja Project is under the sponsorship of the Barnfonden member of the Child Fund, with the Pioneer Child Development Program as an implementing organization in partnership with the County Government of Laikipia under the leadership of H.E. Governor Joshua Irungu, EGH.
This project is centered on fighting negative effects of climate change focusing on restoration of natural water systems and agricultural landscapes in Laikipia county.
This will be achieved by engaging the County Assembly to allocate adequate resources for implementation of the Climate Change Act and expedite enactment of the Water Service Bill 2021.
This will ensure the climate adaptation and resilience work is anchored on solid legal and institutional support .
"The Pamoja project will be realized through advocacy work to promote practical solutions for meaningful change in communities. The project will inspire and empower leaders, farmers, children, youth, and marginalized communities, enabling laws to be passed, practices to change, and enhancing the impact of our work around the world." Said Mr. John King'ori, Executive Director, Pioneer Child Development Program.
Implementation of this project will follow a multisectoral approach, actively involving the department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources, Climate Change, Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries.
In her remarks, CECM Water, Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change, Ms. Leah Njeri, committed the county government's support to successfully implement the project.
"This partnership comes at an opportune time as it will complement other climate-related projects being implemented in the county, such as the FLLoCa program, to address the root causes and help augment resilience in addressing the adverse effects of climate change," she said.
The Mt Kenya West region Pioneer Child Development Programme operations encompass parts of Laikipia, Nyeri, and Meru counties.
In Laikipia, the organization operates in Tigithi, Umande, and Mukogodo East wards.
In attendance were officials from the National Government, the Pioneer Child Development Program, the Child Fund, Laikipia county, Nyeri County, civil society, members of the County Assembly from Mukogodo East, Tigithi, Nanyuki, Umande, and community representatives.
