 Updated on: Aug 01, 2024
Baby Shantel Beth was just 900 grams when she was born, way lower than World Health Organisation defined standard weight of 2.5 kilograms. This was on April 15, 2024.
Not just that, baby Shantel was born on the 27th month of gestation, almost 10 weeks early - gestational age is measured from the first day of the mother's last menstrual cycle to the current date or date of delivery.
The precious angel hailing from the neighbouring county of Nyandarua, Murichu village, indeed, she needed special care and Nyahururu County Referral Hospital (NCRH) became her new home.
Paediatric Critical Care Nurse, Grace Njuguna, in charge of NCRH's New Born Unit, welcomed baby Shantel together with her able team of paediatricians; Dr. Wambui, Dr. Ndirangu, Dr. Wainaina and Dr. Fatuma, along with the entire New-born Unit healthcare givers.
The infant received specialized care in the incubator for three months in a delicate close monitoring care from the NCRH's New Born Unit dedicated staff.
On August 8th 2024, baby Shantel was discharged from the hospital weighing 2.3kgs, an incredible journey that amazed her parents and NCRH community.
"A key factor in Shantel's weight gain was the support provided by our new maternity wing's kangaroo care unit. This innovative approach has proven vital in enhancing the health and well-being of our tiniest patients," NRCH CEO Dr. Lawrence Kamande said while applauding his staff.
Laikipia County Health Department continues to set high level standard of healthcare with a dedicated team of healthcare givers.
Congratulations to NRCH healthcare givers, and all their counterparts across the county.
