H.E Governor Ndiritu Muriithi presided over the official launch of an ICU at the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital.
The unit, the first in the region will improve the provision of critical health care and emergency services.
The event was the climax of October-fest, a 6 days campaign conducted by the Hospital for raising awareness on early diagnosis and treatment for cancer. The campaign has seen a total of 1,200 clients screened for various types of cancers.
The Hospital offers both out-patient and inpatient services. It also offers specialized services and has a visiting Oncologist. The Hospital also has a sheltered House for the old people. All the services are offered at affordable prices for all. The Hospital has recently conducted three brain tumour surgeries successfully and is in the process of establishing an advanced dialysis centre, a CT- scan and a new mortuary.
While giving the key note address, the County Governor thanked the Hospital for the investment into an ICU facility noting this was an important element of Universal Health Coverage as it increased the range of services available to the population.
For affordability of the services, he informed the meeting of the Governments popularization of social Health insurance where Community Health Volunteers have been registering households into NHIF. This initiative has seen our count take the lead in NHIF registrations with a coverage of 63% against the national average of 22%. He encouraged all to improve their health seeking behaviour and make it a routine to go for regular health checks for early detection and treatment of diseases.
Also gracing the occasion was the County First Lady, H.E Maria Mbeneka and the CECM- Health, Dr.Lenai Kamario. In attendance were CHMTs, Hospital Trustees and management, the event partners and stakeholders, hospital staff and members of the public.
During the occasion, the Governor and the First Lady underwent routine health checks and made a brief tour of the hospital and cottages for the elderly.
In his remarks, the CECM-Health noted that while it is the Government duty to provide health care to its citizens, other stakeholders play a big part in complimenting this role and thus Public-Private-Partnerships (PPP) becomes a key pillar to the realization of optimum health care for all.
He thanked the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital Management for putting up the ICU unit and for the ambitious plans to widen the scope of services noting that this will continually improve service provision.
He went on to inform the meeting that the county will be investing more in Preventive and Promotive health services. This paradigm shift is in line with the new County Universal Health Coverage Policy direction and international commitments like the Ottawa Charter that advocates for promotion of health through prevention strategies and the Alma-Ata Declaration that identified Primary Health Care (PHC) as the key to the attainment of the goal of health for all.
