CO OPERATIVES IN LAIKIPIA
Over 147 cooperative societies have been registered by the Department of Cooperative Development and Marketing (CDM) in Laikipia County.
- 105 Saccos,
- 32 agriculture-affiliated societies
- Six housing societies,
- One ex Mau Mau society,
- One bodaboda union
- and two sand harvesting societies
with a share capital of Sh 2.99 billion and deposits and loan outstanding of Sh 3.08 billion.
According to Paul Njenga Waweru, Laikipia County Director (CDM) ,the cooperatives have a turnover of Sh 628 billion and total asset worth Sh 3.32 Billion.
The department has been promoting boda boda saccos and from the mobilization training in August last year, we have managed to register 11 boda boda saccos and one umbrella union, Waweru observed.
He observed that the formation of the boda boda sacco aimed at promoting sanity and feasibility of the industry.
According to the Director, the County Government has invested a lot of money on the installation of milk coolers in Five Dairy Societies.
The Directorate is working out to achieve Four Strategic Goals which include formation of Laikipia County Dairy Cooperative Union so as to come up with Milk Processing Factory in the County, as well as ensuring increased milk intake among all societies with milk coolers, noted Waweru.
Besides, formation of the Laikipia Grain Growers Cooperative Union will minimize wastage and low prices at harvest times and also re-energise the recently formed boda boda union.
He also added that the Directorate will continue to incline its objectives with the Global and National VISION 2030.
He appreciated the County Government for its continued support of the Directorate and support of Cooperative movement by providing revolving fund for the societies.
