Stakeholders' Meeting For Proposed Project To Improve Resilience For Households In Solio Settlement Scheme

The department's water technical officers recently attended a stakeholders' validation workshop in Naromoru, to assess the feasibility study by Habitat for Humanity Kenya for the proposed project in Solio dubbed "Improved Resilience for Rural Population in the Semi-Arid Lands of Laikipia."
The department's officials were present to provide technical advice in the execution of this mega project, which aims at improving the socio-economic status of 1,228 vulnerable households in the Solio settlement scheme. The implementation period is scheduled to last for 40 months, from September 2023 to 2026.
Based on the needs assessment, the project will first be implemented in four of the seven villages in Solio. The four are; village 3 (Bahati), village 5 (Mathingira), village 6 (Mukandamia), and village 7 (Baraka).
The project is structured to cover three different aspects: WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), climate smart farming, as well as disaster risk reduction and climate change.
The following are some of the expected outcomes;
- Improved access to clean, safe and sufficient water for domestic and livestock consumption.
- Improved hygiene & sanitation practices at household and community level.
- Ensure 500 hectares of farm land have access to water for crop farming.
- Ensure 4 schools have improved sanitation including Menstrual Health Practices.
- Planting and growing of 20,000 trees in schools, health centers and other designated areas.
- Increased community skills in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
In attendance were representatives from: Habitat for Humanity Kenya, County Commissioner's office, Department of Water, Department of Agriculture, Lions Club International Laikipia Branch, Water Resource Authority, CETRAD and representatives from 5 villages.
