Engaging Women In The County's Development Agenda

Women leaders from Rumuruti ward, and some parts of Salama, Marmanet ward, and Sosian wards, on Saturday 24 February 2024 spent day representing various groups in an open forum to deepen the ongoing conversation of making women an integral part of development discourse Laikipia county.
The forum was chaired by H.E Governor Joshua Irungu EGH at the Familia Takatifu Catholic Hall , and involved about 600 women leaders representing groups such as youths, civil societies, PWDs, religious groups, among others.
The county-wide conversation that began in Nanyuki three days ago, then Nyahururu on Friday has now incorporated around 1,600 women leaders from various interest groups.
Delegates were drawn from various sectors including youth groups, civil society, Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) religious groups, traders, among others.
The main topics of the day were; ways women can get funds for their development through the County Enterprise fund, and matters distribution of 50,000 water tanks to households across the county.
All these are in efforts to looking for ways on how women can be self reliant through engaging in income generating activities.
The Governor urged all the women who will benefit from this project to harvest rainwater, start kitchen gardens for their households and sell the surplus which will contribute to healthy food intake and improve hygiene levels in our households.
In a consensus, we have agreed that the ward CDAs will be the only link between the County Government and the women groups to avoid any confusion, the project will run until 2026 each year in four phases, the project will be without involving politics, and the quantity of the tanks will be 3,000 litres, the Governor said.
He also reiterated his administrations commitment to amplifying Womens voices to foster their participation in development and economic empowerment for enhanced development.
Also present in the forum was Her Excellency Grace Wakahora, County Secretary Mr Koinange Wahome, CECMs; Administration Ms. Purity Kendi, Agriculture Mr. Dennis Kasoo, Trade Mr. Stephen Kisorio, Chief Officers; Administration Mr. Mike Kemboi, Sports Ms. Jecinta Koree, Water Mr. Abraham Lemanyishoe, Livestock and Fisheries Ms. Mary Gichuru, Advisors, and other government officials.
