The Laikipia Health Service - LHS Health Service (LHS) has kicked off a month-long Household Registration and Enrollment drive and deployed 1,153 Community Health Promoters (CHP) for the job.
The CHP teams have been split into 156 units spread across the county to do door-to-door visits to register household members and collect data on health needs.
Information collected in specialized mobile devices is used to link cases captured with the LHS facilities at the local level for processing at the local level or for referral to other facilities and specialists depending on individual needs.
This is the first phase in which we are targeting to visit between 140,000 and 150,000 households across the county in the month of March. It will be repeated after 6 months to monitor any changes in between, said Dr. Donald Mogoi, the County Director of Health, Preventive and Promotive Services.
The information captured is first and foremost expected to improve efficiency in delivery of health services by informing planning for medical supplies distribution to facilities where they are most needed after analysis of data collected to reduces wastage and time spent by management and patients in referral trips from one facility to another.
This also informs staffing and human resource deployment decisions based on anticipated service demand needs ahead of time, for example using the data collected on expectant mothers to plan for delivery services in each facility Dr. Mogoi added.
On Saturday, LHS issued a general notice to members of the public to expect the visits by the Community Health Promoters who will also answer their questions.
The CHP personnel have identification badges and introduction letters to identify themselves properly to every household they visit.
In the implementation of Preventive and Promotive Health Services at the Community Level of Healthcare (Level 1), our 1,153 Community Health Promoters (CHPs, in all the 156 Community Units in Laikipia County, have the responsibility to take care and link all households to health facilities (Level 2 and above). The CHPs have been trained and supported by both the National and County Government.
Please accord the CHPs support as they commence Household Registration and Enrollment within their assigned areas. Each CHP has been assigned an average of one hundred (100) households. They will be carrying out this task using a mobile-based electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS).
All CHPs will be in their uniform and will have identification badges while carrying out this task. They may also carry their recognizable kit ready to offer any basic services as they continue with this important task the identification letter reads.
The exercise is in preparation for the rolling out of the anticipated Universal Health Coverage (UHC) policy nationwide.
Dr Mogoi said LHS was in touch with other stakeholders and will be making regular public updates on the progress of the exercise.
