E Governor Ndiritu Muriithi commissioned the Clinic on Tuesday October 27 2020 at a ceremony attended by 15 First Ladies led by their their Chaiperson Maria Mbeneka.Theclinic will mainly screen breast, cervical and prostrate cancers. This is a move geared towards attainment of universal healthcare in Laikipia, by introducing this milestone support structure -the Empower Project. The project is as a result of partnership efforts of the County First Ladies' Association (CFLA), office of the First Lady or the Republic of Kenya through Beyond Zero, Africa Cancer Foundation, International Cancer Institute, Women 4 Cancer and ROCHE.
. County first ladies are leading in the awareness of the menace and urging people to go for screening.
The facility is set to bring cancer detection and care services closer to the people of Laikipia and her neighbours, who have, in the past, been forced to travel for hours every so often, which is both expensive, and physically draining for cancer patients.
The launch of the clinic, which is now inside Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, shows the commitment of the county government to provide quality healthcare for all Laikipians.
The county government is shifting its health policy to focus more on preventive and promotive health services to save on millions of shillings spent on curing preventable diseases.
Noting that cancer deaths exceed those from Covid-19 pandemic, governor Muriithi called for similar energy that is directed towards curbing covid-19 to be reciprocated in fighting cancer.
Efforts to fight cancer should be similar to those put in place to slow down the spread of Covid-19, he said, adding that the Empower Project will enable the county do better screening and provide other medical services.
The county head also cited that the county has geared efforts to provide medical insurance through the NHIF scheme, which has seen around 60 per cent of Laikipians enroll. The county government has facilitated 12,500 in enroll to the health insurance.
Echoing the governors sentiments on the need to have a medical insurance cover, the First Lady explained the complications associated with lack of a health insurance.
It is expensive to get treatment anywhere. That is why we urge all Laikipians to enroll to NHIF, if we would attain a 100 percent enrollment to NHIF, we would say no to medical fundraising in the county, said Ms. Mbeneka.
Laikipia today became the 6th county to launch the Empower Clinic after it was started in the country in June last year. Other counties that have embraced the special clinic are Meru, Bungoma, Taita Taveta and Makueni.
